Need a name for a new case

#1

Post by Tom »

I went shooting yesterday and after tumbling and separating my brass
I began resizing some of it. I had been shooting a .303 Brit Enfield, a
Polish M44 MN, and a German K98k.
Getting the 8mm stuff out was no big deal as it is rimless and stands out
from the others. But I thought I had gotten the .303 and the 7.62X54R
in the correct cans. So much for thinking after coming in from a day
in the heat.
So I am sizing away and putting the sized cases into a loading block.
I then pull out my book to see what the case length should be for the
Russian stuff to see if I need to trim any of it. The first resized case I
grab is WAY too long. The next one is within spec and so on for about
4 more cases then another that is again WAY too long. As I look at these
closer I realize that not only are they too long they are also too skinny.

So finally coming to my senses it occurs to me to look at the headstamp.
Sure enough I had run two of the .303 cases through the Russian die.
Now I have two very odd looking rimmed cases that have a short, skinny
body and a long neck. I have more than enough .303 so I am not
concerned about losing two cases but I wondered if there is such a round,
and if so what it might be, or could be, called. Any suggestions?

I am always delighted to share my handloading screwups with others.

Best Regards,

Tom

Tom,
I don't know what to call your case?
But here is something that might interest you.
http://www.jpfo.org/smle.htm
It is an article on the JPFO website about converting British Enfield .303 rifles to shoot Russian 7.62 x 54R ammo. The reason being that 7.62 x 54R surplus ammo is cheaper and easier to find. I thought it was an interesting idea. You may not care since you reload. I just passed it on FYI.

What did you expect?

Thanks for the link. An interesting idea. It could be a long time before
my Enfield needs a new barrel but I will keep this link just in case.
I do use the same bullets in both the Enfield and MN and currently I am
working up loads for a 123gr SP 7.62X39 bullet for both rifles. They
are a little easier on the shoulder.

Best Regards,

Tom
